Thomas Flegler, a prop forward in rugby league, has undergone a transformation in his approach to the game, which has resulted in him earning a debut for the Kangaroos.
Flegler's aggressive style of play often landed him in trouble, as he was frequently involved in match review charges during his early years with the Broncos.
In fact, in one game last year, he was put on report four times.
However, a conversation with Broncos coach Kevin Walters proved to be a turning point for Flegler.
Walters advised him to tone down his aggression and let his performance on the field speak for itself.
This change in mindset led to Flegler being recalled for the State of Origin.
Flegler's new approach also played a significant role in Brisbane's journey to the grand final, where he scored a try against Penrith in his final game for the club.
Reflecting on his transformation, Flegler acknowledged the influence of his Broncos teammates Payne Haas and Patrick Carrigan in elevating his game.
"This year Kevvie always said to me 'you need to be a blue head, not a red head', so I had to be a lot calmer," Flegler said.
This calmer approach has not only improved Flegler's performance on the field but has also allowed him to avoid unnecessary penalties and suspensions.
Flegler's selection for the Kangaroos is a testament to his growth as a player and his ability to adapt his style of play.
It serves as a reminder that aggression, while important, must be controlled and channeled effectively for the benefit of the team.
As Flegler himself stated, "It's no good for the team if you're on the sideline."
