Bears' Coach Rejects Super League Opportunity

The Perth Bears have celebrated an important success ahead of their entry into the NRL, as assistant coach Ben Gardiner has opted against taking a role in the Super League.

Initially appointed as Mal Meninga's key assistant, Gardiner has garnered considerable attention, establishing himself as one of the promising talents in rugby league coaching.

Most recently, he played a role with the Penrith Panthers, contributing to their victories in the 2023 and 2024 premierships.

The Samoa head coach has dedicated recent years to enhancing his credentials in the NRL and at the representative level, gaining recognition as a respected football strategist.

This solid reputation caught the eye of Super League champions Hull KR, who are currently looking for a successor to outgoing coach Willie Peters, who is set to lead the inaugural PNG Chiefs.

Despite the allure of a head coaching position abroad, Gardiner has decided to remain dedicated to the Bears' journey, as reported by Code Sports, while the club readies itself for its debut in the NRL.

Meninga recently highlighted Gardiner's decision to decline offers from other teams.

"Ben had some interest, but he's turned that down, I believe," Meninga stated.

This decision serves as a significant advantage for Perth, who are actively constructing the framework of their football department in anticipation of their inaugural season.
