Rugby League icon Billy Slater has unleashed on 'coward' fans in the aftermath of a disgraceful referee incident that marred the weekend footy action.

The NRL legend, known for his lightning-fast moves on the field, didn't hold back when addressing the abuse hurled at referee Kasey Badger after the fiery clash between the Bulldogs and West Tigers.

The former Clive Churchill Medal recipient and current Maroons coach didn't mince his words, urging the keyboard warriors to step up and take on the challenge of being a referee themselves before criticizing the officials over perceived mistakes.

Slater, who is no stranger to high-pressure situations on the field, emphasized the importance of respect in the game and called out the abusive behavior displayed towards the referees.

"If you reckon you've got what it takes, lace up your boots, grab a whistle, and show us how it's done.

Don't hide behind your screen and launch cowardly attacks," Slater passionately expressed on The Billy Slater Podcast, where he shared his thoughts on the matter.

"Referees play a crucial role in the game.

Without them, there's no rugby league.

So let's show them the respect they deserve," Slater added, drawing on his deep understanding of the sport and its intricacies.

In true Aussie spirit, Slater's spirited defense of the referees serves as a reminder of the values of sportsmanship and fair play that are ingrained in Rugby League.

His fiery stance echoes the sentiments of many in the Rugby League community, where respect for the game and its participants is held in high regard.
