Cleary Considers Future with Coaching Changes

Penned in the hearts of Penrith Panthers fans, halfback Nathan Cleary has shared insights on his future at the club.

He revealed that the appointment of Peter Wallace as head coach might actually influence his decision to remain with the Panthers, though he clarified that he isn't making any immediate choices.

Having never faced off-contract situations before, Cleary acknowledged that the approaching November 1 free agency period is something he might consider exploring.

This adds a layer of clarity following his father Ivan's announcement about stepping away from his head coaching role by the end of 2027.

With four premierships under his belt, Cleary's market value could exceed $1.5 million in the NRL, and he could even receive offers from European rugby union or Super League teams.

In a conversation with AAP at Brisbane airport, he expressed that Wallace is the type of coach he would want to play for. However, he emphasized that his decision regarding the future will be delayed due to the imminent State of Origin period and the Panthers' strong trajectory toward another thrilling September.

"It's not something I've thought about too much, but potentially [Peter Wallace as coach could help me want to stay]," Cleary stated to AAP.

"Wal is the kind of guy anyone would like to play for. He was someone I loved playing alongside … It's obviously a pressing thing, which I understand, but it's definitely a decision I won't take lightly, and it won't happen any time soon.

"I was lucky enough to play alongside Wal, he was someone I looked up to, and the way he played the game, the toughness, I have the utmost respect for him. I'm really happy for him.

"But it doesn't change my position. I'm still not ready to make that decision yet, and that won't change over the next six to eight week period.
