NRL sidelines referee Adam Gee - fans confused

NRL responds after 'mind-boggling' call to axe grand final referee Adam Gee sparks backlash

The NRL has hit back after facing criticism for benching top referee Adam Gee ahead of the first week of finals, a move that has left fans scratching their heads.

Gee, who took charge of last year's showdown between the Panthers and Broncos, was praised for his ability to let the game flow smoothly [like a well-oiled machine on the field].

Despite being hailed as the cream of the crop at the end of 2023, Gee has been left on the sidelines in 2024, missing out on refereeing duties for State of Origin as well.

The NRL has instead opted for Ashley Klein, Gerard Sutton, Todd Smith, and Grant Atkins to officiate the upcoming finals fixtures, leaving Gee out in the cold.

Responding to the uproar, NRL's head of football, Graham Annesley, defended the decision by citing form and performance as the key factors.

"Selections were based on form and Todd has earned his place with consistent performances throughout the season," Annesley said.

"Competition for spots pushes referees to raise their game and deliver top-notch performances".

As the footy world buzzes with speculation and debate over the contentious call, it remains to be seen how the quartet of appointed referees will fare in the high-stakes finals arena [where legends are made and dreams are shattered].
