The St George Illawarra Dragons have officially released winger Nathan Lawson from the remainder of his playing contract.
Lawson had joined the Dragons in early 2025 on a development deal after showcasing his skills in Rugby Sevens.
The speedy outside back made a notable impact, particularly in offensive plays during the NSW Cup, leading to his NRL debut in Round 13 of the previous season.
This year, he advanced to the Dragons' Top 30, but struggles with injuries and defensive challenges limited his appearances to just four NRL games, making him a regular in the NSW Cup.
In his NRL stint, Lawson managed to score two tries and added another nine in 24 NSW Cup games, with his last appearance in Round 18 against the Western Suburbs Magpies, where he played at center.
At 27 years old and a junior from Sutherland, Lawson is set to return to Rugby Sevens as he pivots his career.
"We wish Nathan and his family all the very best moving forward. He was a popular and respected teammate during his time with the club and we thank him for his contributions to the Red V," said Dragons CEO Tim Watsford.
The timing of Lawson's move likely means he aims to rejoin the Australian national team within the next year, as the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles approach, where Australia seeks a chance for a medal.
