The Perth Bears are enhancing their inaugural team with the addition of two seasoned internationals, Junior Paulo from Parramatta Eels and Morgan Smithies from Canberra Raiders, both expected to join the new NRL franchise next season.
Paulo is reportedly set to embark on a two-year contract, while Smithies has inked a three-year deal that includes the option for an additional two seasons.

Securing Paulo is viewed as a significant advantage for the expansion club, with the 32-year-old poised to bring both leadership and extensive representative experience. He is also being considered for the captaincy role, having established himself as one of the top front-rowers in the NRL over the past decade.
Even though Parramatta aimed to keep the experienced prop, sources indicate that Paulo turned down a one-year contract extension in favor of the opportunity in Western Australia.
With 270 NRL games under his belt, the Samoa international is on track to celebrate his 300th game donning the Perth colors. His achievements also include representing New South Wales in four State of Origin series, supplying the Bears with vital big-game experience.
In contrast, Smithies, at just 25, boasts an impressive track record. The England international joined the Raiders from the Super League before the 2024 season and played a crucial role in their 2025 minor premiership victory. His reliability and consistency have made him a standout forward at the club.
Over slightly more than two seasons in Canberra, Smithies has accumulated 48 appearances, known for his hard work and defensive prowess.
