In a surprising move less than a year after inking a two-year deal with the Newcastle Knights, a young gun out back has been given an early release from his contract.
Touted as the next big thing at the start of the season, Tom Jenkins failed to make his mark for the Knights and found himself sliding down the ranks, not making a single NRL appearance since facing off against the Canterbury Bulldogs in Round 7.
Overshadowed by players like David Armstrong, Thomas Cant, and Fletcher Sharpe, Jenkins spent most of his time in the NSW Cup after making the switch from the Penrith Panthers, where he managed to score five tries in just six games.
With little hope of earning a spot in the top squad next year, Jenkins' time in Newcastle has officially come to an end as he has been given an early release from his contract, as reported by The Daily Telegraph.
The 23-year-old's next move remains unknown, but one thing's for sure - he's proven himself to be a reliable backup option.
