Cronulla Sharks stalwart Dale Finucane has decided to hang up his boots after a career filled with hard hits and tough tackles.
The 32-year-old made the tough call to retire from the NRL following a string of concussions that had his wife, Maddie, worried about his health.
With a contract that was set to run until 2025, Finucane's announcement came as a surprise to many.
However, the experienced forward knew that he had to listen to the advice of medical professionals and put his health first.
"After experiencing numerous concussions throughout my career, it was clear that I needed to take a step back and prioritize my well-being," Finucane said.
"Maddie's concerns for my safety were a wake-up call for me, and ultimately, there was no other choice but to retire from the game."
While it's a bitter pill to swallow for Finucane, he is looking forward to the next chapter of his life.
Despite exploring potential avenues for a return to play, the tough decision to retire was the only viable option for his long-term health.
As Finucane hangs up his boots, the NRL community bids farewell to a true warrior on the field.
His commitment and dedication to the game will be remembered for years to come, and he leaves behind a legacy that will inspire future generations of young athletes to put their health first.
