Luai's Future at Tigers Uncertain

The Wests Tigers have made a significant decision regarding co-captain Jarome Luai, who may depart before his contract is up.

It is reported that the club has granted him permission to leave at the conclusion of the 2026 NRL season.

What was initially envisioned as a long-term commitment for Luai at the Tigers has quickly unraveled this year.

Luai's contract included player options starting from 2027; although he has activated the first option, he has also inked a two-year agreement with the PNG Chiefs, marking the team's inaugural signing as they prepare for NRL entry in 2028.

Originally slated to spend another year at Concord, sources from News Corp have revealed that the Tigers made a decision last week to inform Luai's management that he is free to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

While Luai can opt to continue with the Tigers, he now faces no obstacles in securing a one-year deal with another club.

This opens the door for the financially capable Perth Bears to potentially recruit him for their debut team in 2027, though it remains uncertain which other teams might also be viable candidates for Luai's services.

Although the Tigers' decision to facilitate an earlier departure than expected might seem unexpected, the team's performance has been tumultuous since Luai announced his move to PNG.

Currently, the club has suffered seven losses in their last nine games, highlighted by a disappointing defeat against the St George Illawarra Dragons.

Luai's inconsistent performance has been a recurring subject of discussion, despite his absence in that specific match.
