The Melbourne Storm has officially responded to shocking remarks made by Phil Gould regarding their star hooker Harry Grant, just days before State of Origin 3.
With the Origin decider approaching, Grant certainly didn't need the added distraction stemming from Gould's claims that he bends the rules.
His comments were delivered in a light-hearted manner, yet Gould dramatically labelled Grant a "cheat" during an episode of Nine's 100% Footy, while discussing Grant along with Cameron Smith and their impact on referees.
Gould's position as general manager of football at rival club Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs raised eyebrows, leaving many puzzled by his remarks.
In response, Storm chairman Matt Tripp defended Grant, asserting that Gould's accusations carry no merit and will not affect Grant's performance in the lead-up to the crucial Origin match.
"This time last year, Gus said Harry was Queensland's best player to try and put pressure on him and unnerve him."
"Now he's doing the same thing, but this time calling him a cheat in the hope he gets under his skin."
"It's water off a duck's back for Harry. It's a really strange thing to say about a player who is one of the fairest in the game."
"To call him a cheat is pretty ridiculous. It certainly hasn't annoyed Harry."
