Leilua Leaves Dragons for Super League Move

Luciano Leilua is set to leave the St George Illawarra Dragons following the conclusion of the 2026 season, having secured a transfer to the Super League with the Catalans Dragons starting in 2027.

The seasoned forward marks the fifth player from the Dragons confirmed to be heading to the Super League next season, as the club navigates substantial roster alterations.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Leilua has finalized a three-year agreement with the Catalans Dragons, signaling the end of his second term with the Red V.

Aware that 2026 would be his last year in Wollongong, Leilua received notice from the Dragons that a contract extension would not be offered beyond this season.

At 30 years old, he sought an early release and considered a mid-season move to the Brisbane Broncos before the June 30 transfer deadline, although that attempt did not succeed.

"For sure, I would love to (remain at the Dragons). I just let my manager handle all that, but all I can do is just go out there and play good footy," Leilua conveyed to the publication.

"I'm not too sure at the moment. I haven't really spoken to anyone or the club yet, and I'm just trying to play good footy for the moment."

Even with Leilua's wish to stay, the Dragons have a number of young forwards eager for first-grade time. Dylan Egan, Ryan Couchman, and Jacob Halangahu are viewed as essential elements of the club's future, with Keaon Koloamatangi also joining next season.

The team will also part ways with Jaydn Su'A, who will move to the Parramatta Eels, raising questions about the club's decision to let go of Leilua's experienced presence, especially given the potential to develop younger talent.
