Come Monday, September 9, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs will be raising a glass to their standout players of the season at the prestigious Dr George Peponis Medal ceremony.
Since 2023, this award night has been dubbed in honor of the legendary Dr George Peponis OAM; MBBS, a true icon who left a lasting mark in the world of Rugby League.
Hailing from the Peloponnese as a Greek migrant, George made his mark with the Bulldogs starting in 1974, gracing the field for 132 memorable matches over a nine-year period until 1982.
George's illustrious career saw him lead the Bulldogs to two thrilling Grand Finals, with the ultimate triumph of the 1980 Premiership under his belt.
He proudly represented NSW in seven matches and donned the green and gold of Australia in eight Test matches, showing exceptional leadership by captaining five of those games.
Post-retirement from playing, George continued his love affair with the game by taking on pivotal roles as Chairman of both the Club and the NSW Rugby League.
His influence and impact on the sport were recognized when he was named as the hooker in the Berries to Bulldogs 70-Year Team of Champions back in 2004.
In 2007, he was also honored with a spot in the Bulldogs Ring of Champions, and further solidified his status by being inducted into the inaugural Hall of Fame in 2015 as one of the game's elite five players.
With a heart full of Bulldog pride, George is also a cherished Life Member of the Football Club, showcasing his unwavering commitment to the team and the sport as a whole.
So as the Bulldogs gather to hand out accolades in his name, they will be paying tribute to a man whose legacy continues to inspire and shape the future of Rugby League.
