Canberra Raiders: The Legacy of Green

The meaning behind the jersey: Canberra Raiders and the ACT

LeagueNews.co | Robbie Hamilton

Since their inception, the Canberra Raiders have been synonymous with their signature green color, which has become a hallmark of their home jersey. This affiliation has led fans and commentators alike to refer to the team as the Green Machine, a nickname that persists to this day.

In addition to the green, a distinct feature of their jerseys is the blue and gold stripe on the sleeves, symbolizing the traditional sporting colors of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

The first jersey worn by the Raiders upon entering the NSWRL in 1982 was the result of a design competition aimed at creating a uniform that would not conflict with those of other clubs. The chosen colors of green and white were inspired by Hall, the first rugby league team in the region.

Incorporating blue and gold stripes as part of the winning design ensured that they would become a crucial element in various versions of the Raiders' jerseys throughout the years.

A notable moment in the club's history occurred in 1992 when the Canberra Raiders faced the Great Britain Lions in a special match. To commemorate this historic encounter, the team wore a predominantly white jersey adorned with blue, yellow, and green stripes across the shoulders and chest, marking a departure from their usual lime green. This design was a tribute to the club's history and its ties to Canberra and the ACT.

Looking ahead to 2025, the Raiders are set to honor their past by reintroducing a version of the 1992 jersey for some of their away games. This throwback design will allow newer fans and those who may not recall this style from 1992 to appreciate a piece of their heritage. The jersey will also make a return in 2026 as part of the NRL's two-year jersey cycle.
