The Melbourne Storm have made waves in the NRL by allowing Cameron Munster to engage in discussions with the PNG Chiefs ahead of their anticipated entry into the league in 2028.
Munster is under contract with the Storm until the conclusion of 2027, and prior indications suggested that both the club aimed to keep him for the long haul, and the five-eighth was eager to retire with the Victorian team.
This shift comes after Munster was widely rumored to be considering a move to the Perth Bears, but he opted to stay put after the Storm released up-and-coming talent Jonah Pezet to the Brisbane Broncos through the Parramatta Eels, who are utilizing him this season.
Although Munster's contract allows him to explore other clubs starting November 1, the Storm's decision to let him speak with the Chiefs early, as reported by News Corp, could set the stage for the club to secure another player before the deadline.
The Chiefs have already secured the signings of Jarome Luai, Alex Johnston, English forward Matty Lees, and Connor Watson as their initial four recruits. They are also reportedly negotiating with rugby union players Joseph Manu and Zac Lomax, who might join before November 1.
It's noted that Munster has a limited opportunity to discuss prospects with the PNG Chiefs until he returns to play after his ongoing knee injury. He can engage with them again in November if he so chooses.
"There is a level of interest from PNG," said Munster's agent, Braith Anasta.
"We have been in constant communication with Melbourne and Melbourne have the greatest of respect for Cam. We have had some dialogue with PNG but remain completely open to Cameron finishing his career at Melbourne."
