Hayze Perham is confident in his potential to become a standout NRL fullback, though he faces stiff competition for playing time.
He shone brightly amid Brisbane's (7-15) challenging premiership defense, delivering an impressive performance against Canberra that helped secure a win for the Broncos.
Perham scored a pivotal try, provided a brilliant pass to winger Grant Anderson, and successfully converted five out of six attempts, leaving coach Michael Maguire optimistic about his future.
The 27-year-old has reportedly signed a one-year extension to stay with Brisbane through the end of next season, but he knows he must compete for the No. 1 spot.
Currently, Reece Walsh, a representative fullback, holds that position, though he was sidelined with a syndesmosis injury during Friday's game.
Walsh's drop in form this season may open an opportunity for Perham.
When asked if he could be the NRL's next star fullback, Perham responded affirmatively.
"At the end of the day, it's just footy. I really love playing the game. I really love the position that it puts me in," Perham told AAP.
"It was definitely a tough time last year, and to be in a position like this (is great), I'm just more happy that the boys can come out here and get a win.
"I'm really looking forward to what the future holds."
Perham's journey has been marked by missing the entire 2025 season due to an ACL injury, and he has participated in just four NRL matches this season.
He credits Walsh with helping him regain his potential.
"Obviously, he (Walsh) is a world-class player. Unfortunately, he picked up that injury, but it obviously gives me an opportunity," Perham said.
"He helps me out a lot in all different areas of the game, so I try to ask him as many questions as I can."
Maguire has clearly taken notice of Perham's progress, expressing admiration for the fill-in fullback in his post-match remarks.
"I was really pleased for Hayze. He's been on a journey too, and sometimes it doesn't go the way you like," the coach said.
"He's got his best footy in front of him. We've just got to keep him on the field now, and the way he played tonight was excellent."
