In a candid revelation, Ivan Cleary, a legendary figure in the world of Rugby League with four NRL premiership victories under his belt, has lifted the lid on his battle with mental health issues.

The Penrith Panthers coach, known for his tough-as-nails coaching style and no-nonsense approach, has bared his soul ahead of the release of his upcoming memoir.

Speaking with a raw honesty reminiscent of a post-match interview after a hard-fought game, Cleary shared that he had been struggling to cope with his mental health, especially when he returned to coach the Panthers in 2019.

"Definitely struggling to get out of bed...

just becoming emotional for no real reason or you don't think it's a reason, but there's obviously reasons there," Cleary revealed in an interview on Today.

Like a seasoned player with years of experience under his belt, Cleary admitted that, like many men, he had been keeping his struggles bottled up inside, refusing to open up and discuss them.

"I didn't want to burden my wife or thought people are doing it harder than me," he confessed with the grit and determination of a true Rugby League warrior.

But finally, like a playmaker making a crucial decision on the field, Cleary decided to open up and confront his mental health issues head-on.

In doing so, he has shown that even the toughest and most successful coaches can experience moments of vulnerability and need support.

As Cleary continues to guide his team towards victory on the field, he has also set an example off the field by encouraging others to "man up" and address their own mental health struggles.

In a sport where strength and resilience are prized above all else, Cleary's openness and honesty serve as a reminder that even the strongest players can benefit from seeking help and support.
