The Parramatta Eels are grappling with another injury setback in their backline, as Sean Russell faces a period of absence due to a right quad strain.

Initially, there was optimism that the issue was simply a cramp sustained during a surprising victory against the Manly Sea Eagles on Sunday afternoon. However, the club has since confirmed that he'll be out for at least a month.

Round 23 is currently targeted for Russell's potential comeback. He will miss key matches in Round 19 against the Sydney Roosters, Round 21 versus the Penrith Panthers, and Round 22 against the Wests Tigers, with his team having a bye in Round 20.

Russell is expected to return at Homebush in Round 23 when they face the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

As he prepares to join the Perth Bears next season, Russell has been a dependable player for Parramatta, contributing four tries and three assists over 134 games while averaging just under 100 meters per game.

This injury is particularly problematic for the Eels, who aim for a finals spot and likely need six or seven victories from their final eight matches, having won two of their last three outings.

Compounding their challenges, other backline players are already struggling with injuries: Will Penisini (Osteitis Pubis, Round 21-23), Bailey Simonsson (ankle fracture, Round 23), Jake Tago (hip, TBC), and Apa Twidle (adductor strain, Round 23).

Araz Nanva is set to step in for Russell as Parramatta prepares for their matchup against the Sydney Roosters this Saturday evening at Allianz Stadium.
