Ronald Volkman has made a persuasive case for a contract extension at Parramatta after his standout performance in Sunday's upset against Cronulla. The Eels have signed Jarome Luai on a one-year deal from the Tigers for next season, before he transfers to the PNG Chiefs in 2028, which casts doubt on Volkman's future at the club.
Despite the uncertainty, the 24-year-old playmaker showcased his talent in the 38-18 victory against the Sharks, highlighting his skills with a stunning solo try. This sparked a conversation among Eels fans who feel the club made a mistake opting for Luai for one season instead of securing a new contract for the in-form Volkman.
The skilled five-eighth has consistently performed well as the season progresses, solidifying his position beside Eels captain Mitch Moses. With eight tries in 18 games alongside 10 try assists this season, he has made his mark. Initially beginning 2026 as the backup No. 6 to Jonah Pezet, he has emerged as coach Jason Ryles' primary choice.
Volkman recently admitted that the arrival of Luai in 2027 left him feeling uncertain, acknowledging he might need to seek opportunities elsewhere. "The NRL is the top competition in terms of playing rugby league and that's where I want to play my footy," he stated. "I would love to stay at (Parramatta), but I think they're heading in a different direction, which I totally understand."
Parramatta is set to cover between $600,000 and $700,000 of Luai's 2027 contract, while the Tigers will take care of the rest of his $1.2 million annual deal. Although Luai is expected to take over Volkman's No. 6 role, many Eels fans believe their funds would be better spent securing Volkman for a longer term instead of bringing in Luai for just one season.
However, recent reports suggest that the Eels are making strides to retain Volkman, especially after informing Joash Papali'i he can look for a new club. Coach Ryles has expressed his desire for Volkman to remain at Parramatta, but with Moses and Luai likely to be the main halves pairing in 2027, the young five-eighth faces a significant decision regarding his career.
