Daly Cherry-Evans' upcoming matches in the NRL may define his legacy as he leads the Sydney Roosters toward the 2026 premiership in the absence of Sam Walker.
Despite Walker having surgery over the weekend due to an ankle injury sustained in Saturday's 26-12 defeat to the Dolphins, the Roosters have not completely ruled him out for the rest of the season.
To reach the grand final on October 4, Cherry-Evans will need to take on additional responsibilities. "We really need Chez (Cherry-Evans) right now," said prop Naufahu Whyte on Monday.
Cherry-Evans, who announced his move to Hull FC in 2027, joined the Roosters to help them return to the grand final following their 2019 title.
The 37-year-old has a finals record of 9-11 and hasn't reached a grand final since his Manly side lost to the Roosters in 2013.
Hugo Savala, primarily a centre this season, is anticipated to move to the halves next to Cherry-Evans as the Roosters prepare to face South Sydney in their final regular season match on Friday.
Savala's impressive performance last season raised questions about the Roosters' decision to sign Cherry-Evans.
"We've seen what he (Savala) did for us last year when he was playing in the halves," noted Roosters utility Connor Watson.
"He's a big body, defends well, runs the ball well, and has a good kicking game. He's pretty much got it all so I'm looking forward to having him back there."
"With Daly Cherry-Evans as your halves partner, I think he'll take a lot of responsibility, allowing Hugo to focus on his strengths."
"We're pretty blessed to have Daly in the team."
Win or lose on Friday, the Roosters will secure either third or fourth place, facing either Penrith or the Warriors in the first round of the finals.
This scenario might prompt coach Trent Robinson to rest key players, although Watson suggested that winger Daniel Tupou and back-rower Angus Crichton are close to returning.
"I think it's important for us to go out there and play well on Friday night as a team," Watson remarked after recent setbacks against Wests Tigers and the Dolphins.
"Toops is pretty close, I think. Not sure about Gus, but he's training hard as he always does, so it'd be great to have those two back."
"Sometimes taking a break due to injury can be beneficial; it freshens you up, and having both of them back for the finals would be great timing."
