PNG Chiefs Focus on Local Talent

The PNG Chiefs are making strides in assembling their first roster by integrating local talent, signing three promising rugby league players from Papua New Guinea.

This trio is recognized as some of the top up-and-coming athletes in the nation, highlighting the Chiefs' dedication to fostering homegrown talent instead of solely relying on seasoned NRL players.

Nevertheless, the specifics of the contracts have sparked some concern.

Though these three players have already proven themselves internationally and made a mark in England, they are set to join on development deals rather than full Top 30 contracts.

Given that NRL teams can only accommodate six development deals, this raises significant questions about the availability of opportunities for other aspiring local players aiming to enter the inaugural Chiefs lineup.

This recent development follows a PNG Chiefs board meeting focused on retaining the country's top emerging talent, with Voro, Morea, and Glare clearly identified as key targets.

In a twist, the London Broncos may soon feature more PNG players than the Chiefs have signed from their local system in their initial recruitment efforts.

Voro, 23, has long been considered one of Papua New Guinea's standout young playmakers. His impressive performance during his first Queensland Cup season with the PNG Hunters led him to join the London Broncos last December, further accelerating his career.

His remarkable form propelled him to earn a Papua New Guinea international debut in 2025 and also drew attention from the Perth Bears before they redirected their recruitment focus.
