Marshall Reflects on Retirement Decisions

Wests Tigers legend and head coach Benji Marshall recently revealed a retirement decision that nearly didn't happen.

In a candid discussion with fellow former Kiwi international Shaun Johnson, Marshall shared that he had verbally agreed to terms with another NRL club that would have allowed him to extend his playing career through the end of 2023.

"I regret it a little bit, to be honest."

During his time with South Sydney, Marshall played a crucial role in helping the team reach the 2021 grand final, showcasing his versatility by stepping into various roles as needed.

This performance was seen as a fitting finale to his career. His coach at Souths, Wayne Bennett, recognized it as such.

"Wayne sat me down and goes 'what a way to go out on a grand final. What else have you got to prove in the game?'" recalled Marshall.

After contemplating Bennett's words, Marshall thought, "he's right," and realized he didn't want to relocate his family again. With young kids at home, moving them away from their relatives would have been challenging.

As a result, he made the retirement decision with others in mind, a shift from his usually selfish approach. "But I chose to retire off the back of that conversation and I knew before the grand final that I was retiring. I just didn't tell anyone."

Reflecting on his choice, Marshall admitted, "But looking back now, I sort of wish I kept playing. I still jump into sessions now and think 'I could still do this'."
