Maguire's Tough Call: Experience Over Youth for Broncos' Revival

Duffy

Coach Michael Maguire harbors no resentment towards young halfback Tom Duffy but acknowledges that sitting him out is necessary to help Brisbane's struggles.

Duffy was moved to the Broncos bench before their match against Canberra on Friday after wearing the No.7 jersey during a disappointing 40-6 defeat to the Warriors last Saturday.

Instead, Maguire chose to bring veteran playmaker Ben Hunt into the role for the first time since round 18, following Hunt's game-winning field goal against the Raiders in last year's NRL finals series.

The coach hopes Hunt will ignite the reigning champions (6-15) and steer them away from the unwanted wooden spoon.

"Through the time that we're going through at the moment, I just feel that the experience is going to add to just controlling what we're doing," Maguire stated.

"I've been pretty pleased with how Tommy's going. I really enjoy coaching Tommy. He's got plenty of footy in front of him.

"But I just felt at this moment that having Hunty there being through pretty well everything he can do in rugby league, he can just get on the field and just play his part for the team."

Additionally, the coach named Hayze Perham to step in for fullback Reece Walsh, who is sidelined due to a syndesmosis injury sustained last round.

"I remember him two or three years ago when he really started to hit his straps," Maguire commented.

"He's a real talent, and he just needs to be able to stay on the field now and keep playing and performing. I think he's probably got the best years ahead of him."

Maguire sidestepped inquiries regarding star prop Payne Haas possibly needing hand surgery, which would exclude him from the World Cup, noting he appeared "pretty good" on Thursday.

The coach is concentrating on the upcoming match and facing an emotionally charged Raiders squad bidding farewell to veteran prop Josh Papali'i.

Canberra has renamed GIO Stadium to 'Papa's House' for his final home game as they aim to honor their most-capped player and maintain their slim finals aspirations.

"You look at all the legends of so many clubs that have made such an impact. You just can't go and get another player and say, OK, you're going to replace him," said coach Ricky Stuart.

"Glen Lazarus was here to be involved in the team meeting ... It was nice to have Lazo here because we put Josh up in Lazo's class of players."
