Dane Gagai learns fate at NRL judiciary
Newcastle Knights' outside back Dane Gagai has successfully evaded punishment from the NRL judiciary concerning a hip-drop tackle on AJ Brimson during Sunday's magical round victory.
Despite the Knights' triumph, where they secured a 36-12 victory over the Titans, Gagai had originally been charged with a Grade 1 offense, which would have allowed him to play next weekend regardless of the hearing outcome.
However, after being exonerated at the NRL Headquarters on Tuesday, Gagai maintains a clean judicial record. This development is significant, as it helps avoid harsher penalties for any future infractions this season.
During the match, no penalties were issued regarding Gagai's tackle, which involved holding onto Brimson as he sought to break away down the left flank.
The tackle appeared to predominantly connect with the ground before making any contact with Brimson's legs.
With no injuries reported from the incident, Gagai has successfully dodged a charge, and now the Knights aim to capitalize on their promising start to the season, boasting a record of 7 wins from 11 matches.
The Knights will enjoy a bye this week before facing the Parramatta Eels on Saturday, May 30.
Across the magic round, a total of 15 players received charges, with 14 accepting early guilty pleas. Among those, Lehi Hopoate from the Manly Sea Eagles will serve a one-match suspension, while Patrick Herbert faces a two-match ban. Others received fines, including Connor Tracey and others, with amounts varying up to $3000.
