Jacob Saifiti, a prop for the Newcastle Knights, is likely done for the 2026 season after receiving one of the heaviest penalties in recent times.
The NRL Match Review Committee has charged him with a Grade 2 reckless high tackle, which could result in a four-match suspension. If he contests the charge and loses, that ban extends to five matches.
Since the Knights have a bye in Round 27, the only chance for Saifiti to return in 2026 is if his grading is reduced or the charge dismissed.
Both outcomes seem improbable, but the Knights may choose to contest the charge, especially with other critical forwards like Dylan Lucas (ankle) and possibly Francis Manuleleua (elbow) sidelined due to injuries.
Saifiti was sent off by referee Adam Gee during the Round 26 match against the New Zealand Warriors after making contact with winger Luke Laulilii's head with his shoulder in the 12th minute while Newcastle led 10-0.
The Warriors eventually triumphed, winning the game 46-32.
Newcastle will face an elimination game in Week 1 of the NRL Finals Series, likely meeting either Cronulla or South Sydney.
