The St George Illawarra Dragons have added to their impressive retention success by securing Hunter Fangupo with a four-year agreement.
This skilled forward can operate both on the edge and in the middle and developed his talent at Collegians.
Turning 17 this year, he is eligible to represent either Tonga or Australia and has shown promise as he progressed through the club's ranks.
His manager confirmed he will remain with the Dragons until 2030, allowing him to work towards a position in the Top 30 while still being eligible for the SG Ball competition in the next two years and the Jersey Flegg competition for the subsequent two seasons, matching the length of his contract.
Fangupo had an outstanding season with the Harold Matthews Cup Illawarra Steelers, showcasing his ability by scoring multiple tries and troubling defenders with his height and strong running style, which featured effective footwork.
So far this year, the Dragons' only recruitment setback has been losing Asher Chapman, who opted to join the Perth Bears on a three-year deal extending to the end of 2026.
However, the Red V have successfully retained all major targets, especially within the forward pack, securing long-term deals for Hamish Stewart, Dylan Egan, Toby Couchman, Ryan Couchman, Loko Pasifiki Tonga, and Jacob Halangahu.
Fangupo's contract, lasting until 2030, provides him the necessary time to develop, and if he continues to improve, he might be poised for a first-grade debut when the team faces a salary cap challenge due to several key young forwards hitting free agency within two years.
