Mathew Feagai, a winger for the St George Illawarra Dragons, shared that playing for Samoa is something he cherishes as he aims to earn a spot in the squad for the forthcoming World Cup.
The squad announced in October is anticipated to be one of the strongest in Samoan history within the 13-man format, with numerous elite NRL players committed to representing the nation.
Having played for Samoa in the previous World Cup in 2022, Feagai is eager to be part of this year's team alongside stars like Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Sua Fa'alogo, Jarome Luai, Brian To'o, Stephen Crichton, and Jeremiah Nanai.
Four years ago, Samoa made headlines by reaching the World Cup final for the first time, overcoming Tonga in a thrilling quarter-final and edging past England in a nail-biting golden point match.
"I love playing for Samoa. I've only played the one game, played in the last World Cup," Feagai remarked.
"I come from a very, very passionate Samoan family. My mum and dad (are) both from Samoa."
"So if I was to play there, I don't think I will, with all the players that they have, but to represent Samoa is always a pleasure and always something that I'll hold pretty close to the heart."
This year, the island nation will be without key player Payne Haas, who is set to undergo surgery for a long-standing hand injury.
Even with the absence of such a top talent, Feagai believes Samoa can still compete effectively against heavyweights in Australia and New Zealand.
