Dolphins Face Star Player Contract Dilemma

The Dolphins are confronted with the challenge of potentially losing one of rugby's top talents, as concerns mount that Herbie Farnworth is eager to explore his value on the open market for a contract in 2028.

Currently under contract until the end of the 2027 season, Farnworth will be free to engage in talks with other clubs starting this November, unless the Dolphins can secure an agreement beforehand.

With reports from the Courier Mail indicating a fierce $1 million bidding scenario, the Dolphins' prospect of retaining the English international is increasingly threatened, especially with the Sydney Roosters lurking in the background.

The Dolphins are determined to retain the 26-year-old talent, yet the Roosters are expected to clear several high-profile players at year's end, potentially giving them significant financial resources for a recruitment push.

Stars Angus Crichton and Mark Nawaqanitawase are set to transition to the 15-man code, while the futures of Daniel Tupou and Daly Cherry-Evans remain uncertain for the upcoming season.

While the Roosters are barred from directly contacting Farnworth for another five months should he choose to test the market, his exceptional skills could merit a $1 million salary.

Since joining Redcliffe in 2024, Farnworth has elevated his performance, averaging 165 metres per game this season and consistently posing a threat when he has the ball.

If the Roosters manage to secure Farnworth for the 2028 season, he would enhance an already impressive back line featuring Queensland Maroons star Robert Toia and scoring sensation Reuben Garrick.

Additionally, the Bondi-based club is eyeing off-contract representative winger Murray Taulagi, which would further bolster their attacking options in the backline.
