Brimson's Future Uncertain Amid Bulldogs Swap Proposal

Former NRL player Justin Horo has proposed a trade that could see the Bulldogs acquire AJ Brimson from the Gold Coast Titans.

Frustrated with not playing fullback, Brimson has received permission to engage in conversations with other clubs.

The former State of Origin representative has had to take on roles in the halves and centers due to Keano Kini occupying the No. 1 position.

Reports from May indicated that Brimson might be considering leaving behind his $900,000 annual contract with Gold Coast, which extends through 2030.

On Friday, the Titans confirmed that Brimson was allowed to explore other opportunities.

Coach Josh Hannay stated, "The club was approached by AJ's management about whether we would allow AJ to explore other options within the NRL and we've granted them permission to do so."

He added, "As a club we have the utmost respect for AJ and we know he loves this club and always will. The discussions have been incredibly respectful and will remain so. There is no animosity either way. This is simply a decision that both parties see as being in their own best interests."

Reports suggest that Brimson is in negotiations with the PNG Chiefs, who will join the NRL in 2028.

The Chiefs have already secured Zac Lomax and may add Joey Manu, both of whom can play fullback but have predominantly featured in the centers.

Canterbury was reported to be 'monitoring' Brimson's situation back in May.

The Bulldogs recently extended fullback Connor Tracey's contract until 2028 but attempted to acquire Jahream Bula from the Wests Tigers.

On SEN radio, Horo suggested a potential trade involving Tracey and Brimson.

"A team that needs a fullback or could use an upgrade…how about Brimson to [the] Dogs?" Horo said. "[You swap] Connor Tracey with a little bit of money from the Bulldogs coming back towards the Titans. [Tracey could play] wing or centre and then he can back-up fullback if you need him."

Nevertheless, Bryan Fletcher raised concerns about the Bulldogs' salary cap, considering Tracey reportedly earns $450,000.

"If the Dogs are only offering Jacob Preston $600,000, AJ is on $900,000 a year," he said. "I don't think AJ Brimson is on the Dogs' radar."
