The Canterbury Bulldogs have secured a new signing, capturing the talent of emerging star Archie McIlwain.
His management confirmed that the local junior from the Knights will join the Bulldogs at the beginning of 2027 on a two-year contract, with a chance to advance through the club's pathways to either a development or Top 30 role in the future.
McIlwain, a skilled outside back capable of playing fullback, wing, or centre, has significant potential and was part of the Knights team that reached the under-19 SG Ball Cup grand final this year.
With recent debutant Toby Winter securing the fullback position, McIlwain predominantly played on the wing during the SG Ball season, where the Knights narrowly lost by four points to the Sydney Roosters, led by Rex Bassingthwaighte.
Although McIlwain scored only one try in the finals, he demonstrated strength in carries and defense, and is set to transition to the Bulldogs, who face critical decisions regarding their back five in the years ahead.
The club has re-signed Connor Tracey for the next two seasons, but has explored alternative options for the fullback position, particularly with Marcelo Montoya retiring and Bronson Xerri joining the Melbourne Storm.
While Canterbury has solid outside backs, Stephen Crichton has recently moved to the halves and Matt Burton to the centres, leaving uncertainty about Burton's long-term future with the team.
McIlwain will kick off the 2027 season with the Bulldogs at the junior level and pathways, aiming to progress to the NSW Cup for senior competition experience.
