Blues to Retain Crichton for Origin Opener

The NSW Blues are likely to keep Stephen Crichton in their lineup for the first game of the 2026 State of Origin series, despite his struggles at the Canterbury Bulldogs.

Crichton has been a regular starter for the Blues in previous years, but concerns about his form and injuries have emerged early this season.

This uncertainty coincides with the standout performances of Kotoni Staggs and Tolutau Koula at their clubs; however, reports from News Corp indicate that both will be overlooked for selection.

Instead, the Blues are expected to maintain their faith in Latrell Mitchell, who is anticipated to recover from a back injury, as well as Crichton in their backline.

Staggs may be brought into the squad for backup due to the upcoming bye week for the Broncos and concerns about Mitchell's training adjustments.

Further, reports suggest that Addin Fonua-Blake will make his debut in the forward pack, taking the place of the injured Payne Haas, while Ethan Strange from the Canberra Raiders is also likely to make an appearance off the bench.

Manly's Haumole Olakau'atu is expected to be included after an impressive show against the Tigers, solidifying his strong form this season.

Wayde Egan is mentioned as a contender for the dummy half position, joining the likes of Reece Robson and Blayke Brailey in consideration.

With several players needing to prove their fitness this weekend, the Blues still have some adjustments to finalize.

Additionally, Mitchell Moses and Nathan Cleary are anticipated to be named in the halves, despite concerns over their similar playing styles.

This means that Wests Tigers star Jarome Luai will not be selected.
