Talks have commenced with Canberra Raiders forward Matty Nicholson to extend his stay in the capital beyond next year.
Nicholson's 2026 season has been quite tumultuous due to offseason shoulder surgery, but he has managed to return and play in four of the last five matches for the Raiders.
Prior to the shoulder issue, he faced a syndesmosis injury and fractured fibula, sidelining him for four months during his debut season in 2025.
According to The Daily Telegraph, the Raiders aim to secure Nicholson, amid concerns that Hudson Young may depart the club after 2027, as he hasn't yet signed a new contract.
Young is allowed to negotiate with other clubs starting November 1 this year, and he is reportedly considering exploring what offers might be available.
Due to his reputation, Young could command a significant salary on the open market given his rising status among top forwards in the league.
Like Young, Nicholson also lacks a contract for 2028, prompting the club to move quickly to finalize a deal before he can entertain other offers in just over two months.
Nicholson has demonstrated potential as an elite back rower, scoring two tries in his NRL debut after transferring from the Warrington Wolves.
The Raiders are believed to have proposed a $3.3 million contract to Young to keep him in the capital, but he has not yet accepted this offer.
