Roosters reportedly eyeing Canberra's Ethan Strange

Tom Dearden and Ethan Strange are among the possible replacements for Sam Walker, The Daily Telegraph reports, with both currently in Kangaroos camp alongside him.

The Roosters withdrew their contract offer to Walker on Monday night after months of negotiations and reportedly have no plans to reopen talks.

The club is reportedly willing to let him leave immediately, rather than wait until 2028, when he can negotiate with rival teams from November 1.

David Riccio told SEN that Perth may be the only club able to meet Walker's salary expectations for 2027.

"I think he's more likely not to be at the Roosters next season than being there," Riccio said.

"We saw it when the Roosters did it with Latrell Mitchell and Mitchell Pearce."

Nathan Cleary has also been linked with the Roosters, though the Panthers star is reportedly inclined to stay with his club beyond his 2028 contract.

Dearden has been connected with a move to Sydney for months because his partner works there, but he and his management have maintained his commitment to North Queensland.

He is contracted to the Cowboys through 2029 and recently welcomed his first child with fiancée Millie Oliver.

Strange is a Roosters junior whose father, John, and sister, Jasmin, are already at the club; John coaches its NRLW side, where Jasmin plays.

Strange is contracted to Canberra until the end of 2028, with the Raiders weighing up their halves options amid competition from Ethan Sanders and Coby Black.

"Tom Dearden makes a whole heap of sense (for the Roosters)," Riccio said. "I think the Roosters know exactly the elite level player he is."

The Roosters are also reportedly comfortable relying on young talents Hugo Savala and Toby Rodwell if Walker leaves and no major signing eventuates.
