Souths are copping some heat for their handling of the latest Latrell Mitchell saga, with critics branding it as 'completely unprofessional'.

The South Sydney star found himself in the spotlight after a photo emerged of him near a suspicious white substance in a Dubbo hotel room.

After being summoned to a meeting with South Sydney bigwigs, Mitchell was left to face the music on his own at a makeshift press conference.

The NRL sensation was then ambushed by a horde of reporters in the Rabbitohs' carpark, where he remained tight-lipped with a simple "no comment".

However, Mitchell took to Instagram a few hours later to issue a public apology, acknowledging that he needs to step up his game.

It's clear the Rabbitohs have some work to do in managing this situation, as the spotlight remains firmly fixed on their star player.

Time will tell if they can turn this 'mess' around and emerge stronger on the other side.
