The Sydney Roosters have become the surprising frontrunner for the signature of off-contract North Queensland Cowboys winger Murray Taulagi.

This Origin-level player, who is uncertain for Game 1 of this year's series due to concussions, has yet to solidify his future, and indications suggest that he may be leaving Townsville, where he has spent his entire NRL career.

The Cowboys' stance on Taulagi's future remains ambiguous, but he has been linked to multiple clubs in Sydney, most notably the St George Illawarra Dragons, who are in urgent need of fresh wingers for the upcoming 2027 season.

However, the Sydney Roosters are reportedly the favorites to secure his services as they brace for the departure of Mark Nawaqanitawase at the season's end.

Wide World of Sports' The Mole has indicated that the Roosters view Taulagi as a potential direct replacement for Nawaqanitawase, while also providing backup should Daniel Tupou choose to retire in the near future.

Tupou has expressed his desire to continue playing, but no agreements have been reached so far.

While the Roosters have already acquired Reuben Garrick for 2027, they may prefer to deploy him in the centers if feasible.

It's clear that Robert Toia is likely to secure one center spot at the Roosters, although Billy Smith seems to have lost favor recently, raising the possibility that another backline player may be necessary.

If Taulagi joins the team, Garrick is expected to claim that position, thereby leaving Smith out of the starting lineup.
