The North Queensland Cowboys have officially announced that they have signed Joe Chan from the Melbourne Storm on a two-year contract that will begin in 2027.
Chan was let go earlier than expected, having been under contract until the conclusion of 2028, but now he has secured a position in North Queensland under coach Todd Payten.
The player, who previously played for the Catalans Dragons, made his NRL debut in 2023 and has since played 47 games for the Storm, serving as the 18th man in last year's Grand Final against the Broncos.
This season, Chan has participated in 18 games and will complement the Cowboys' roster while also having the ability to play at centre, a position he has filled eight times in the NRL.
Frank Ponissi, the Storm's head of football, expressed gratitude for Chan's contributions during his time in Melbourne.
"Joey has been a valuable member of the NRL squad over the past four years and has worked hard for his opportunities. He's a versatile player who has played his role for the team on numerous occasions," he noted in a Storm statement.
"We're thankful for Joey's contribution to Storm and wish him the best with his move to Townsville next season."
Joe is the son of Alex Chan, a former Kiwi international who played for the Storm in 2004 and 2005, marking the first father-son duo in Melbourne's history.
Cowboys recruitment manager Clint Zammit expressed his excitement about Chan joining the team in the north.
