The PNG Chiefs are dropping significant hints that their upcoming signing could be their most impactful yet, with the expansion team possibly eyeing a star halfback for their debut roster.
Recently, the Chiefs announced their sixth signing, securing Panthers and NSW Origin winger Brian To'o. His name is now included on the steps in Port Moresby, which chronicle the team's signings in the order they were made, starting with their first recruit, Jarome Luai.
However, one interesting detail regarding the steps has not gone unnoticed by the PNG Chiefs.
Each signing is assigned a number, but the number for the seventh step, '007 (reserved),' has been deliberately obscured, suggesting a special intention behind the halfback role.
From November 1, two of the sport's prominent figures, Nathan Cleary and Sam Walker, will be making their way onto the open market, both set to become free agents at the conclusion of the 2027 season.
Matty Johns has expressed that PNG is optimistic about securing one of these talented playmakers.
"Apparently, they're very confident. My mail is they're confident that they'll get either Cleary or Walker. That's what they're talking," noted Johns during a segment on SEN radio.
Walker might be the more accessible option, as his management and the Roosters have yet to finalize a contract. Reports indicate negotiations are postponed until after the finals.
Furthermore, PNG's tax-free advantage could play a crucial role in attracting the 23-year-old, enabling the new franchise to meet his asking price of $1.7 million per season while presenting opportunities for third-party agreements.
