Newcastle Knights player Asu Kepaoa has faced a six-match suspension following the use of a homophobic slur during a NSW Cup round-of-16 match.

Kepaoa appeared before the NSWRL judiciary on Wednesday, where he admitted to the offense during last week's reserve-grade match against St George Illawarra.

Previously sent off before halftime, he was immediately referred to the judiciary and has since issued a personal apology for the distress his words caused.

Despite being a former player for Wests Tigers and Penrith, Kepaoa has yet to make his senior debut for the Knights after transferring from the Panthers.

On Wednesday, Newcastle released a statement emphasizing that such language is unacceptable within the club.

The statement read, "The Knights accept the outcome and fully support the process."

It further noted, "The Newcastle Knights are an inclusive club and pride ourselves on being a welcoming place for all players, staff and supporters."

Furthermore, it asserted, "Language that causes harm to individuals or communities has no place in the club, in the NRL, or in the community."

The club also mentioned, "The club will work closely with Kepaoa to ensure he receives appropriate education around the impact of language and the responsibilities that come with representing the Newcastle Knights and the values we stand for."
