The Wests Tigers are addressing internal dynamics as they seek to reshape their coaching framework. This evolution involves a notable reduction in Benji Marshall's authority while the club's decision-makers manage the search for a new assistant coach.
This initiative coincides with the Tigers' advertisement for a coaching director, aimed at alleviating the burden on Marshall following a tumultuous 2026 season. The situation surrounding Adam Doueihi served as a significant catalyst for this decision.
As part of this process, the club plans to present Marshall with various candidates to consider, acknowledging concerns that he might be surrounded by individuals who do not challenge him.
Among these are Brett Hodgson, an assistant coach, Chris Heighington, who focuses on conditioning, and the general manager, Richards.
Dean Ritchie, a journalist from Code Sports, expressed support for this strategic shift during an NRL 360 segment. He remarked, "I don't think Benji, with all due respect, has the runs on the board to be demanding who comes in and who doesn't."
Ritchie asserted that ultimately, the club should play a decisive role in selecting appropriate staff, stating, "It's up to the club to say we think this bloke will work and you have to work with him." He recommended that while Marshall should be part of discussions, he shouldn't have the final say in hiring decisions.
