Jeremiah Nanai, a standout player for the North Queensland Cowboys, is prioritizing his team's success over personal accolades this season.
After a shoulder injury sidelined him during the Pacific Championships last year, Nanai made his return to the field last weekend against the Cronulla Sharks.
His recovery included a shoulder reconstruction, forcing him to rehab during the summer and miss the Cowboys' historic season opener in Las Vegas.
Although he played in all three matches for the QLD Maroons last year, Code Sports reports that he feels his recent return may not justify selection by coach Billy Slater.
"(I am) just focused on playing good footy for the Cowboys, and getting my job done here. (I will) just try to play some good footy again," Nanai stated.
"Origin will be there, but for now, just club footy."
Even at just 23 years old, Nanai has stepped into a leadership role within the Cowboys, guiding younger players as they develop their skills.
"I think I was probably the only senior one (in the rehab squad)," he remarked.
"It was pretty much just me and a few younger boys. It wasn't too bad. I guess I have just gotta help out those younger ones coming through."
