Kiwi Ferns' Wiki embraces wing switch

Winging it: Wiki embracing her new role for the Ferns

The Kiwi Ferns will meet Fetu Samoa in the World Cup semi-finals on Saturday at McDonald Jones Stadium, and Mackenzie Wiki expects a tough contest.

"They're going to bring everything, they're such a great strong squad," Wiki said.

Wiki strengthened her case for selection in Saturday night's 40-12 win over PNG Orchids, scoring twice and setting up another try.

She now has four tries in two appearances, having joined the side after Shanice Parker was injured despite initially missing the squad.

Coach Ricky Henry praised Wiki's impact, saying she had formed a right-edge combination with Stacey Waaka and would stay in the team if she kept producing.

Usually a centre, Wiki scored 10 tries in 13 games for the Raiders this season before adapting to the wing.

"It was a massive change from centre to wing, but I've always been told wherever you get put, to play your heart out," Wiki told NRL.com.

She has embraced a team-first approach, saying: "I've always made a joke that if you want me in the middle, I'll go in the middle."

Wiki has represented Cook Islands, including at the 2021 World Cup, and leans on Canberra teammates Zahara Temara and Leianne Tufuga for support.

She said representing Cook Islands honours her grandfather and mother, while New Zealand represents the country where she grew up and both parents were born.
