Gallagher's rapid Jillaroos debut

Green Machine to green and gold: Inside Sheridan's whirlwind week

Australia's defending champions followed their record 124-6 victory over Wales with a Sunday semi-final against Fiji Bulikula.

The match also gave Sheridan Gallagher her Jillaroos debut: she entered in the 33rd minute to become Australia's 187th player.

Just 72 hours earlier, Gallagher had been watching the team from home before coach Jess Skinner called her into camp.

Initially added to the extended squad as cover for Julia Robinson, who had dislocated her wrist, the Raiders fullback was then selected to face Wales.

"It's pretty crazy that 72 hours ago I was only called into camp and I got to play this weekend, so it's something pretty special," Gallagher said.

Gallagher averaged 177 metres and broke 34 tackles per game this season, helping the Raiders reach the finals for the first time.

The former captain of the Under 20 Young Matildas had hoped to add to her international appearances.

"For sure, I think everyone who plays the game wants to wear their national team jersey and for me that was definitely a goal," Gallagher said.

"I think it's pretty special to be able to play for Australia in two different codes and not too many people have done it in soccer and rugby league.

"I think it's something I'll cherish forever and probably something that won't really hit me until I retire one day.

With Skinner weighing up selections for the semi-final, Gallagher said she was glad to learn from her teammates.

"To be able to play with the players like Tamika Upton, Tarryn Aiken, Isabelle Kelly, they're players I look up to, so it's been an awesome week."
