Canberra Raiders stalwart Josh Papalii has officially announced his retirement from rugby league, set to conclude at the end of the 2026 NRL season.

Initially, Papalii wasn't expected to play beyond 2025, but after showcasing impressive form, he received a contract extension, allowing him to stay with the team for another year and earn a State of Origin recall late in 2025.

While there were rumors of a potential move to the English Super League in 2027, Papalii clarified at a media session on Monday that this season would mark the end of his playing career, indicating that this upcoming game would be his farewell in Canberra.

The Raiders will face the Brisbane Broncos on Friday night, followed by a bye week and then a Round 27 away match against the North Queensland Cowboys, where Papalii will conclude a remarkable journey that is expected to end with 342 matches, alongside his 24 State of Origin appearances, 11 Tests for Australia, and another 13 for Samoa.

Reflecting on his career, Papalii expressed gratitude towards his teammates for their support over the years.

"This career is maybe only reality because of the boys I play with week in and week out, and they are the special memories and bonds I'm going to miss as a player."

"I'm sure when Friday comes and we get that win, we will have a few beverages, but for now, it's just soaking in the week and it will be a good time to say my goodbyes to the NRL world."

"When the 2026 season ends, I'm announcing my retirement from the NRL."

In a heartfelt gesture, the Raiders have decided to commemorate his legacy by renaming GIO Stadium to "Papa's House" for this weekend's match in honor of his contributions to the sport.
