Alex Johnston, renowned for his scoring prowess with South Sydney, is on the verge of making history as the first player to sign with the Papua New Guinea Chiefs.
This move could mark Johnston's second historical achievement this year, as he prepares to be the inaugural member of the NRL's 19th franchise ahead of the Chiefs' debut in 2028.
The 31-year-old appeared to confirm his upcoming transition via an Instagram story, where he excitedly stated, "Yessssss sirrrrrrr."
However, the Chiefs are also focused on securing their first marquee player, with Jarome Luai being the main target.
The Wests Tigers star recently visited PNG, where he engaged with officials and met Prime Minister James Marape.
Marape expressed appreciation for Luai's interest, stating, "To be the first high-profile player to come and show interest in the team is something we deeply appreciate."
The Prime Minister added, "It sends a message that Papua New Guinea is ready, rugby league is strong here, and the future in the NRL is bright."
Johnston is expected to join the Chiefs on a one-year contract, reportedly valued at a tax-free $325,000.
Earlier this season, he broke Ken Irvine's long-held try-scoring record, achieving a remarkable 212th and 213th try for the Rabbitohs.
