The mighty Newtown Jets have punched their ticket to The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup Grand Final after pulling off a thrilling comeback to snatch a hard-fought 18-16 victory over the brave Canberra Raiders at Leichhardt Oval today.
Despite falling behind 12-0 early in the first half, the Jets refused to back down, trading tries with the Raiders and relying on the precision kicking of halfback Niwhai Puru, who nailed all five of his goal attempts.
Now, the Jets will lock horns with their fellow founding club, the North Sydney Bears, at CommBank Stadium on Sunday 29 September in a championship showdown for the first time in 81 years.
The last time these two historic teams clashed in a Grand Final was way back in 1943, when the Jets emerged victorious with a resounding 34-7 triumph in front of a roaring crowd of 60,992 at the SCG.
After a narrow 18-16 defeat to the Bears in the Major Semi-final last Sunday, Jets captain Billy Burns knows his squad will need to step up their game if they want to hoist the coveted The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup premiership trophy for the first time since 2019.
