From Eels to Sky: Abbi's Rising Journey

LeagueNews.co | Jason Patrick

Abbi Church, star of the Parramatta Eels NRLW, has marked an extraordinary year by being selected for her Women's State of Origin debut with the NSW Sky Blues.

As one of four debutants joining her teammates Ellie Johnston, Jayme Fressard, and Jocelyn Kelleher, Church describes the past 12 months as a "whirlwind" that feels more like a "television script" than reality.

Beginning her rugby career in 2021, the 27-year-old experienced a breakout season in 2024 with the Eels, achieving notable victories such as winning the Dally M Fullback of the Year.

She was also named in the Australian Jillaroos squad, represented the PM's XIII, and narrowly missed out on the Dally M medal, finishing just two votes behind Olivia Kernick.

"I never thought I'd be pulling on an NRLW jersey," Church shared.

Now, she prepares to add to her accomplishments as she enters the Origin arena under the guidance of new New South Wales head coach John Strange.
