'Outrageous': NRL's top eight thrown into chaos despite Dragons' historic resurgence

The Dragons' hopes of making the top eight have been crushed, even after coming close to staging the mother of all comebacks in NRL folklore.

And just like that, the race for the top eight title is wide open for the taking.

After a lackluster season that saw them wallowing at the bottom of the ladder entering round 26, the Parramatta Eels pulled off the upset of the season to leave the Dragons' dreams shattered.

But not before the Dragons nearly pulled off a miraculous turnaround.

With just over 10 minutes remaining, the Eels were comfortably ahead at 44-12 before the Dragons suddenly came alive, storming back with five tries to bring the score to a nail-biting 44-40 and leaving just one play to potentially snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Yet, a long-range kick attempt from Ben Hunt was swiftly shut down by the Eels' defense.

Oh, what a game of twists and turns it was!
