The St George Illawarra Dragons have decided to dismiss coach Shane Flanagan after a disappointing start to the 2026 NRL season, marked by seven consecutive losses.
After a promising start with a close match against Canterbury in Las Vegas, the Dragons have unfortunately stumbled through the season, culminating in a 30-12 loss to the Rabbitohs last Saturday.
Additionally, the club's general manager of football, Ben Haran, has also been released from his position.
Despite being awarded a contract extension in August of last year that would have kept Flanagan around until the end of 2028, the results have led to a change in direction.
"Shane has played a critical role in setting the foundation for where this club is heading," Dragons chief executive Tim Watsford commented at the time of the extension.
He added, "He's re-instilled belief in the playing group, coaches and supporters together with reiterating the privilege of wearing the Red V."
Watsford had emphasized that the re-signing reflected the club's long-term vision of "building a sustainable future," prioritizing growth over immediate results.
He also stated, "The Dragons are proud of the progress that is being made and remain focused on continuing the journey toward consistent finals contention, driven by a committed group of players, staff, and loyal supporters."
Watsford concluded, "This is an exciting era for the Red V; one built on resilience, local pride, and an unwavering belief in the future."
