St George Illawarra Dragons head coach Dean Young has recently provided an update regarding the head coaching position at the club.

Having served as an assistant coach during two separate periods, including time under Todd Payten at the North Queensland Cowboys, Young has openly expressed his desire for the permanent role.

He is reportedly in contention with another club legend, Ben Hornby, who is currently at the South Sydney Rabbitohs under Wayne Bennett.

The Dragons have not set a specific timeline for their decision on who will lead the club into 2027, but Young is confident in the ongoing process.

"The club's been really open and honest with where everything's at. They've got a process to do," Young stated on ABC Radio.

He expressed gratitude towards the staff and players, noting, "I really appreciate all the staff and all the players for buying into the change, and I feel like we're getting better, so that's where my focus is at the moment."

It appears the Dragons are in no particular rush to finalize their next head coach, as they have nearly wrapped up their recruitment for 2027, with most contract decisions already made.

Notably, key recruits like Scott Drinkwater, Keaon Koloamatangi, Luke Metcalf, Phillip Sami, and Connor Watson are set to join the team.

Scott Drinkwater, one of the incoming players, has indicated that Young was a significant factor in his decision to sign with the club, suggesting a potential inclination toward Young in the future coaching discussions.
