In a season filled with unfavorable news, the Brisbane Broncos are finally poised to receive some positive coverage.
Xavier Willison is close to securing a long-term deal that will keep him with the Broncos through the end of the decade.
The Mole has reported that Willison, who was anticipated to explore the open market on November 1 amid interest from other teams, is nearing a new three-year contract worth approximately $950,000 annually.
This figure is substantial and highlights the high regard in which the Broncos hold the promising 23-year-old.
The timing of this potential extension is critical, particularly as the club prepares for the exit of Payne Haas, who will join South Sydney after this season.
As this departure approaches, retaining the Kiwi forward beyond his current contract, which concludes at the end of 2027, has become essential for Broncos management.
This extension is expected to last through to 2030, positioning Willison as the second-highest paid player at the club, following fullback Reece Walsh, who reportedly earns around $1.25 million per year.
With this deal, Willison will become the first player in the club to be signed into the upcoming decade.
The Broncos will establish a solid core with Willison, alongside Mitch Barnett, Ezra Mam, Jonah Pezet, and Reece Walsh, all locked in until the end of 2029, while Patrick Carrigan and Kotoni Staggs will remain until the conclusion of the 2028 season.
